چکیده

We consider self-organizing data structures in the case where the sequence of accesses can be modeled by a first order Markov chain. For the simple-kand batched-k–move-to-front schemes, explicit formulae for the expected search costs are derived and compared. We use a new approach that employs the technique of expanding a Markov chain. This approach generalizes the results of Gonnet/Munro/Suwanda. In order to analyze arbitrary memory-free move-forward heuristics for linear lists, we restrict our attention to a special access sequence, thereby reducing the state space of the chain governing the behaviour of the data structure. In the case of accesses with locality (inert transition behaviour), we find that the hierarchies of self-organizing data structures with respect to the expected search time are reversed, compared with independent accesses. Finally we look at self-organizing binary trees with the move-to-root rule and compare the expected search cost with the entropy of the Markov chain of accesses.

Self-Organizing Maps for Time Series

We review a recent extension of the self-organizing map (SOM) for temporal structures with a simple recurrent dynamics leading to sparse representations, which allows an efficient training and a combination with arbitrary lattice structures. We discuss its practical applicability and its theoretical properties. Afterwards, we put the approach into a general framework of recurrent unsupervised m...

Self-Organizing Data Structures

We survey results on self-organizing data structures for the search problem and concentrate on two very popular structures: the un-sorted linear list, and the binary search tree. For the problem of maintaining unsorted lists, also known as the list update problem, we present results on the competitiveness achieved by deterministic and random-ized on-line algorithms. For binary search trees, we ...

Landforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data

During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...

Clustering XML Documents Using Self-organizing Maps for Structures

Self-Organizing Maps capable of encoding structured information will be used for the clustering of XML documents. Documents formatted in XML are appropriately represented as graph data structures. It will be shown that the Self-Organizing Maps can be trained in an unsupervised fashion to group XML structured data into clusters, and that this task is scaled in linear time with increasing size of...

A Modfied Self-organizing Map Neural Network to Recognize Multi-font Printed Persian Numerals (RESEARCH NOTE)

This paper proposes a new method to distinguish the printed digits, regardless of font and size, using neural networks.Unlike our proposed method, existing neural network based techniques are only able to recognize the trained fonts. These methods need a large database containing digits in various fonts. New fonts are often introduced to the public, which may not be truly recognized by the Opti...
